What is a rib knit fabric?

Rib knit is a knit fabric with raised vertical ribs that gives it a more fitted look and flexible stretch compared to plain jersey.

What are the pros and cons of rib fabric?

Pros: very elastic, holds shape well, comfortable, good recovery (doesn’t stay stretched out easily), and gives a neat, fitted look.
Cons: can twist at seams if cut off-grain or sewn with wrong tension, edges may curl depending on the rib type, and it can “grow” over time if the yarn is weak or the garment is heavy. Also, some ribs show needle marks more easily after stitching.

What is the name for ribbed fabric?

Most commonly: rib knit (also ribbing for trims). You may also see rib jersey or 1×1 rib / 2×2 rib as pattern names.

What are the benefits of ribbed knit?

It stretches without losing fit, stays snug where you need it (cuffs, collars, hems), and makes garments more comfortable and flexible in movement. Rib also creates a textured surface that looks clean and structured, even in simple designs.
